So this weekend held many interesting things. Friday was deamed a snow day for my school so I celebrated by waking up at 10, making chocolate chip pancakes, and then watching Spongebob for two hours. That entire day was pretty much lost to the wrath of interesting fiction novels and Rubber Soul on repeat in my stereo. Nothing like spending a blizzard-y day holed up in your room with a good book and some good music.
Saturday was by far the best day of the weekend. After much procrastination, err consideration, my friends and I decided to go night sledding, which I had never done before. Kristi, Cody, Renee, and Melissa all met at my house around 9:30 and we all proceeded to bundle up in layers of fuzzy sweaters, flannel pajamas, and puffy winter coats in order to brave the sub-zero weather taht awaited us. The thermometor read exactly 8 degrees as we trekked out the door with a few dusty sleds and piled into Renee's less than brand-new station wagon.
The night was ridiculously clear, one of the clearest I've seen in my ten years in Michigan. And the lack of clouds only helped the temperature steadily drop. It was the kind of cold where just walking outside makes your nosehairs freeze. Oh yah, it was that cold.
We made our way to the local hill designated for sledding and spent the next hour and a half screaming and maniacally laughing our way down it. At one point a cheap plastic sled was doubled as a snowboard and at another point two people piled onto one small purple sled and went spinning and screaming and laughing down the hill.
It was a great night in every way. It basically embodied all the good things about being in high school. It reminded me that the feeling of just being a teenager is something to be appreciated, not rushed through.
I miss sledding!!...and having time to sled...and not being worried about hurting myself because I can't afford insurance...yeah, enjoy the last few months before embarking out on your own!!!
ReplyDeleteI liked this tale, but the one phrase that struck me was "Rubber Soul on repeat in my stereo". I assume that you're talking about the Beatles album of that name, but I didn't think young people listened to the Beatles nowadays.
ReplyDeleteI'm now an old codger, but I grew up with the band in the sixties and have written about that experience:

You may find it interesting.
