Skipping Class for a Random Adventure

Ahh, Senioritis.
The common affliction that infects high school seniors and causes side effects such as anxiousness, boredom, and lack of motivation while in class. It has officially hit my school and it has officially hit me.

You see, throughout my high school career I have been a pretty typical student. Not going above and beyond to often and basically just doing what I needed to in order to get the grade and move on. But I was also never a bad student by any means. I came to class, did my work, and whenever I got in trouble it was usually for something along the lines of reading while the teacher was lecturing. (Even if it was a book that was teaching me more than the instructor, like Catcher In the rye.)

The point here being that now that I'm a senior I figure I've earned the right to slack off a little. So yesterday me and a few friends skipped class.

THAT'S RIGHT! We did it! We broke the rules!

O.K. so I realize it isn't actually that big of a deal, but it was still pretty fun.

We left at lunch and skipped the class right afterwards and came back for the final hour of the day. However, since all of our parents were home we now had nowhere to go. We sat at the end of the high school driveway, engine idling, and asked eachother what we should do, where we should go. After a lot of blank stares someone suggested McDonalds. We all shrugged and said fine.

McDonalds turned out not to be such a good idea because as soon as we sat down every old geezer sitting in a booth with a cup of black coffee and a scowl gawked at us, openly. As you would imagine that made us pretty uncomfortable. So next we tried the park.

The biggest problem with the park was that, well, we live in Michigan and it's January. We made our best attempts at braving the cold and got some pretty funny pictures out of the mix but all in all it resulted in frostbitten toes and frozen socks.

So we used up the remainder of our hour away from school driving around town listening to music and blasting the heat. We contemplated going sledding but decided it would be PRETTY suspcious if we showed up at our final class covered in snow.

On top of all of this we had Senior Breakfast yesterday morning. It was pretty cool. It basically kickstarted everything that's going to be happening up until graduation. Panera brought us chocolate chip bagels and teachers gave the typical speeches about going to college and getting a job.

So yesterday was interesting! I hope the rest of my senior year can be as exciting.

  1. Ah! Catcher in the Rye. I only ever read it once, when I was a student back in the 1960s (someone borrowed my copy and never gave it back), but one small episode still sticks in my mind: when Holden Caulfield goes to watch a movie at Radio City. It was "so corny I couldn't take my eyes off it". I didn't understand what he meant then, but I do now.
